How do I change rooms during the semester?
The Office of Residence Life recognizes that situations may arise that make it difficult for roommates to remain together. In all cases, you will be advised to initially discuss roommate conflicts with your roommate and then with your Resident Advisor. Your RA will act as an impartial mediator to encourage communication. A professional staff member in the Office of Residence Life may also meet with you and your roommate in an effort to facilitate problem resolution. If, after discussing your concerns, you wish to move to a different housing assignment, you will follow the process below:
- Contact Residence Life (610 330-5335) to schedule an appointment with the Assistant Director of Residence Life responsible for your residence hall to discuss the current rooming situation. You may also be required to meet together with your roommate and a professional staff member.
- If you remain interested in changing rooms, the Assistant Director will provide you with a Room Change Request form.
- After obtaining the necessary signatures from your current roommate(s) and RA, submit the Room Change Request Form to your Assistant Director.
- If a room change is approved, you must meet and obtain the signature of your new roommate. The new room key will be issued after the signed form is submitted to the Office of Residence Life.
- You must complete the move to the new room and return the original room key to the Office of Residence Life by the specified deadline.
Take Note:
- Submission of the Room Change Request form does not guarantee approval.
- Room rates vary. A room change to a building that has a higher/lower rate will result in an adjustment to your bill.
- You may not move prior to being issued the new room key.
- In the case of a roommate conflict, it should be understood that the Office of Residence Life will not “move” a student at the request of their roommate. One roommate must agree to look for an alternative living situation.
- Hall or room changes will not be made during the first two weeks of each semester, except in those cases where permission is received from the Director of Residence Life.
- All room changes, including “body for body” switches and changes within suite/apartments must be pre-approved by the Office of Residence Life.
- Unauthorized room changes may result in disciplinary action.
How do I change rooms between the fall and spring semesters?
To request a room change for the spring semester, follow the process below:
- Complete a Room Change Application through My Housing between November 15th and December 1st.
- Plan to completely vacate your current room and return the room key (regardless of whether a new room assignment has been approved) at the end of the fall semester or as otherwise instructed by the Office of Residence Life. This enables your vacated space to be prepared for another student.
- Prior to spring opening, the Office of Residence Life will notify whether your room change request can be processed. When possible, students are notified about reassignment in December. If an assignment matching your request is not available, you will not be reassigned (i.e. you will remain in your fall semester room).
- Upon return to campus at the start of the spring semester, you will sign out the new room key.
Take Note:
- Vacancies occur due to students departing for spring study abroad programs, graduating, transferring, or taking a leave of absence. Once vacant spaces are confirmed, housing assignments are processed based on class-year seniority in the following order: students returning from abroad, fall residents who request room changes, students returning from leaves of absence, newly admitted students.
- There are VERY few singles available. Singles are assigned using the order listed above.
- If you do not move out, your room change request will be cancelled.
- If you prefer to meet your potential new roommate before being re-assigned, you should wait until you return for the spring semester to request a room change.
- Room rates vary. A room change to a building that has a higher/lower rate will result in an adjustment to your bill.
Specific Information for Moving Into Greek Chapter Houses and other Living Groups for the spring semester:
- You do not need to complete an application if you will be moving into your chapter house or other living group. We will have your information on the spring housing roster submitted by the group.
- You must vacate your fall semester assignment and return the room key by the end of fall semester finals. This requirement enables vacated spaces to be prepared for occupancy by a newly assigned student.
- Failure to move out and/or return the room key will result in key replacement charges and improper move-out fees.
- Do not take the room key for your spring room from the departing student. All keys must be accounted for during room changes. You will receive your key at spring check in.
