AC Approval & Installation

On-Campus

Students residing in non-air-conditioned halls are not permitted to bring their own air-conditioner unit to campus. However, students with medically documented needs may be approved for air conditioning by submitting (fax or mail) documentation from the student’s family doctor to the Bailey Health Center. Once approved, the student will be directed to Facilities Operations to complete the process.  There is a fee for installation and use of these College-supplied units.

Once approved, the student does not need to re-submit for subsequent years.  A student who has been previously approved for an air conditioner and who will not reside in a building with central air conditioning may contact Facilities Operations, 610 330-5373 to request installation.

Only Facilities Operations Staff is permitted to install AC units in college-owned properties.

Off-Campus

Students living on campus at Lafayette College are not permitted to use their own private air-conditioning unit.  The two main reasons that they are NOT permitted in College owned, off-campus housing are:

  1. The electrical systems in the off-campus houses are not strong enough to support the use of an AC unit. Therefore, if an AC unit is in use, it is only a matter of time before a circuit breaker becomes disabled.
  2. When students do install AC units, there is a tendency for students to remove screens/storm windows and either damage them in the process or misplace them over time.

The only exception is when a student requests and is given permission to use an AC unit for medical reasons by the Bailey Health Center via a letter from the student’s family doctor.  Once approved, Facilities Operations will install the unit in your window after a work order has been filed.

Only Facilities Operations Staff is permitted to install AC units in college-owned properties.
